The depth map is capable of assisting the prediction, synthesizing virtual views, or rendering the stereo display. Depth modelling mode is adopted in 3D-HEVC to improve the efficiency of depth intra coding but increases the coding time. This paper proposes a fast algorithm to accelerate the depth intra coding by making use of the variances of the boundary pixels to decide whether to execute DMM or not.
