The Message from Nojima Fault

Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake(Kobe Eartquake) occurred on January 17, 1995 and the disaster caused by this earthquake was named Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Disaster. Hokudan Earthquake Memorial Park opened in April, 1998. In the first year, we had more than 2.8 million visitors though we assumed 200 thousand in a year, because Akashi Strait Bridge was completed at the same time. Sixteen years has passed and the number of visitors reduced to 164 thousand last year (2013). Most of them visit the Park for sightseeing at first but purpose has changed to study about earthquake and disaster.
There were only museum and shop at first. Next year we made monument, cenotaph and Seminar-house where group visitor can hear the story from “ Kataribe” a story teller of earthquake. Then we built Wind power generator in 2002, Earthquake simulator in 2004. we renewed some displays in 2008. In 2009, the wall which survived World war Ⅱ and earthquake was relocated from Kobe. Now we plan a renewal of display for 20 anniversary of Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake disaster.
The activity of museum is not only preserving Nojima Fault but tells what the earthquake disaster was like and lessons from it. We had many requests from visitors to hear about earthquake disaster. Then we established “Shinsainokataribe”, a story teller of Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Disaster. The number of groups hearing the story has increased year by year and it becomes more than 3000 groups in total. The story is about their own experiences, lessons, how to protect oneself and how to prepare for earthquake. Although we have done our best to reduce disaster, earthquake occurred in many places and took many lives. In case of Indian Ocean earthquake and Tohoku earthquake, a large number of people suffered damage for the tsunami. Facing the nature, human seems to be powerless. But we believe that the one can protect one’s own life if the one is conscience of reducing danger and do anything to prepare for disaster.
To have people think about this, preserving Nojma Fault, tell the memory of earthquake disaster and inform new information about disasters is our mission.
