The Pacific Tsunami Museum: Saving Lives through Education and Awareness

Tsunamis are an ever-present reality to all who live on the Hawaiian Islands, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. They have killed more people in Hawaii than all other natural disasters combined.
In Hawaii, over two generations have grown up without ever having experienced a major tsunami, such as the ones that occurred in 1946 and 1960. Coupled with the fact that many new residents have migrated -- particularly to Hawaii Island, the general public understands very little about them. There are many misconceptions about what a tsunami is, including its hazards and risks. Many people are complacent about the dangers and the potential for loss of lives and the devastation that could occur.
The primary mission of the Pacific Tsunami Museum is to promote tsunami education and awareness and this goal is accomplished through a blend of science, history, and survivor stories.
This presentation will outline the importance of education and awareness and the various methods the Pacific Tsunami Museum employs to accomplish these goals which include group presentations, the development of the Hawaii Tsunami Education Curriculum Program, Tsunami Awareness Month activities, training programs for the media, the publication of guidebooks, and public lectures and workshops. The museum also extends its reach beyond its walls with national and international outreach including conference presentations, interviewing survivors from various tsunami events, networking and training local officials to carry out tsunami evacuation drills, meeting with tsunami researchers and preparing exhibits for other tsunami museums around the world. Also covered will be the challenges facing the museum, (a non-profit organization,) and the importance of collaboration with similarly aligned organizations and agencies.
